My longtime friend, Denise (we go back like converse sneakers) won a photo session from a facebook promo that we did back in March (if you haven’t already…please “like us” at www.facebook.com/dexphotos) and now it was time to deliver. She wanted some photos showing off her tattoos and a few headshots.
The tattoo shots interested me because I love a challenge and this definitely wasn’t the norm for me. As primarily a wedding photographer, I never really have to focus on just one part of someone’s body. In this case Denise had this great musical tat on her back and one on her wrist. The challenge was to gracefully display the tattoos and make them the focus in an interesting way. So, I decided to really let her tattoos standout with a deep black backdrop. Also, I wanted soft and smooth lighting for these so I used mostly natural window light.
I was really excited for this photo session because it allowed me to try a few new things and to work with some newly purchased photography “toys” that I got while I was at the Photo Northeast Conference in New Jersey a few weeks ago.
For the headshots we didn’t do the usual expected photos. Instead of using a plain gray backdrop we used one of my new modern fabrics to add a little “pizazz” and also we did a few outdoor shots.
The funny thing is that because I promote our wedding business so much, people will ask me if we do non-wedding stuff like headshots. So…Yes, we do portraits, headshots and all kinds of photo sessions..not just weddings!
Denise wanted to do a shot that allowed you to see the tatted side of her body and the un-tatted side in the same photo..
