Almost everybody that I meet asks me how did I ever get into Photography. So I figured that it would be a good to make a blog entry about how I got started.
I grew up with a love of art and had every intention of that being my career since I was 6 years old. I even studied art as a major in High School in Manhattan and continued with it through college in Brooklyn. In college I took photography as part of the regular curriculum and realized that I enjoyed it better than any of my art classes and I was an “A” student in all photography classes.
I pursued my new passion by taking more classes and doing plenty of self-study. I worked with a friend who was a wedding photographer to help me with the finer points of photography. I spent many hours taking photos for friends in my mother’s basement experiementing with different photo techniques.
Back in 1996 I shot my first wedding for a friend that was looking to save a little on her wedding. I charged very little for the job (I probably lost money on that wedding) but it was a learning experience and gradually lead to bigger and better shoots.
By 2000 I was shooting around 25-30 weddings per year even though I was still working a 9-5 job. Very soon after I incorporated video as an additional service to give clients more options. 
In early 2005, I moved from Brooklyn, NY to Albany, NY and continued to do weddings in NYC but slowly I started to change the businesses focus to shooting weddings in the Capital District.
By 2007, 95% of the weddings that I booked were in the Albany area and I started to become established as a capital district photographer. I also, converted to digital photography and began to offer various digital custom albums.
In early 2009, Photography finally became my full-time career and focus. I improved my equipment by upgrading my camera, lenses and improving image editing software. By the spring of 2009 the website was reconstructed to give it a more modern look and to give a better customer experience. Now, Dexter Davis Photography & Video is well recognized in the upstate area for our high quality and reasonable pricing.
